Rattan and bamboo are both cellular, moisture-permeable materials, which means they respond to ambient humidity rather than resisting it outright — in high-humidity rooms without ventilation, prolonged exposure can cause the fibers to swell slightly and, over years, loosen at the weave joints. For bathrooms and kitchens, we recommend our sealed-lacquer finish option, which adds a moisture barrier without altering the natural texture, and we advise against installation directly above a shower or hob where condensation is constant. In a normally ventilated space, untreated rattan and bamboo perform reliably for decades.
Yes — the wood components are sourced from FSC-certified suppliers, primarily teak, oak, and mango wood depending on the fixture, each selected for a specific reason: teak for its natural oil content and outdoor-grade stability, oak for structural weight-bearing arms, and mango wood (a fast-renewing plantation byproduct) for sculptural, larger-volume pieces. We can provide chain-of-custody certification for any fixture on request, which is standard practice we’d recommend asking for from any supplier claiming sustainable sourcing.
The leather used is full-grain and vegetable-tanned, which develops a patina rather than degrading — meaning color will deepen and slightly darken with light and handling exposure, which is a feature of the material rather than a defect. Cracking is a risk only if the leather dries out completely, so in low-humidity climates or rooms with direct heating vents nearby, we recommend a leather conditioner every 12–18 months. Structural stretch is negligible at the tensions leather straps and wraps experience in a lighting fixture, since the load is static rather than repeated flexing.
The pearls are genuine freshwater cultured pearls, not glass or resin imitations, which we disclose because it directly affects care: genuine pearls are organic and slightly porous, so they should never be cleaned with ammonia-based products or ultrasonic cleaners, both of which can strip nacre over time. Each material needs a distinct approach: rattan and bamboo should be dusted with a soft brush or dry microfiber cloth and never soaked, since standing water at joints is the primary cause of long-term weakening; leather should be wiped with a barely damp cloth and conditioned periodically as noted above; pearls should be wiped with a dry soft cloth only, with no liquid cleaners; natural fiber shades should be vacuumed on a low-suction brush setting to remove dust from the weave without stressing the fibers.
